100% is proud to announce our latest publication: a split 7” record between improvisational metal group Practice, and artist Alex Hubbard.

The union of Practice and Alex Hubbard on a seven inch vinyl slab is a curious one indeed. For what sense is there in pairing an on-again, off-again art school complaint, whose sonic existence is often an improvised metallic noise-rock oblivious to subtlety, with the broadcast recording of a radio advertisement that fictitiously hawks the savory charms of Poseidon’s finer fauna? Might one be the senseless tail to the sensible head, one chasing the other with each flip of the side? Or is it just some novel genre clash, music gathered together like one might scan the radio dial? When the terrain of independent music is so irrigated with the grazing pastures of niche identities (might post-hardcore metal bros or Other Music customers be the butt of some joke here?), is there something to this union of the spoken word comedy section with Steve Albini mouth-breathers? Regardless, it is without sense that I declare to you, reader, that you’ll hear nothing that sounds like what you are about to hear. Forget these words, the evidence is in your hands. “Do you know the seafood diet? When I see food, I eat it.”

ASHER PENN READING ROOM

West Street Gallery is proud to present a collection of New York based artist Asher Penn’s artist books produced between 2004 to present.

Just Say Maybe, Penn’s first self published book, was conceived as a catalog for his senior photography show at the Rhode Island School of Design in 2004. Since then, he has produced numerous volumes that have documented, framed, and expanded upon his explorations in photography, drawing, painting, collage, appropriation, and writing.

Penn uses the structural elements of graphic design inherent in bookmaking to create a personalized context for his artworks. These books demonstrate Penn’s iterative practice of filling books with variations of a single gesture. Often, from book to book, the artist will revisit subject matter and themes, complicating, undermining, or editorializing them.

Despite his multiplicity of approaches, Penn insists that the root of his books is always “photographic.” His book making practice seeks to explore the symbiotic relationship between photography and bookmaking, and discover a spirit of photography that exists beyond limitations of the medium. This is done while reflecting experiences, objects, and images present in daily life.

Along with 30 of Penn’s books, the reading room will also include related multiples and ephemera.

This room will remain open during our regular business hours, Thurs.–Sat, 12–6 PM.
